Week 4: January 9 – 13

  1. Skills - H&R Block Financial Challenge - an Online personal finance simulation in a competition format. During the simulation (until March 23) , students receive paychecks and bills in real time and are challenged to build a budget that allows them to pay their bills on time, manage their credit card balance, and save money for retirement in a 401(k). The simulation does not use real money, but is extremely realistic including features such as Online banking, electronic bill-pay, direct deposit, e-mail bill alerts, 401(k) paycheck deductions, late fees, utilization penalties and more.
    • How to register - 1:20 - H&R Block Financial Challenge (top right is for students)
      1. Enter unique code class code
        • Juniors - This team's class registration code is: HOBVSCT
        • Seniors - This team's class registration code is: YGIDXRV
        • Then validate
      2. Next enter your real first and last name -
      3. Then enter a username 7-13 letters and numbers only no spaces/characters - and a password 7-13 no spaces, case sensitive - use your school email address
      4. The address field for Crater BIS auto-populates -
      5. Next, check email for registration confirmation email - in that email> click on activate and login link > this will takes you to site > select the click here to go to next step Hyperlink (to be finished, every tab needs to be green)
      • As a group - we will do a quick review of the vendor selection info packet as each of you will have to make final vendor selections and create a budget - Once the simulation starts, students will not be able to make changes to their vendor options or 401(k) plan

  5. Spark Search - Check out and review your amigos using the handy-dandy score sheet in word or as a pdf that Rogan gives you
    • Rules of Engagement:
      1. You need to go through 6 different students Sparks
        • 3 from college (#OwntheFUTURE) and 3 from career (#OwnmyCAREER)
        • at least one of each spark must be from a student in a grade that is different than your own
      2. You will evaluate each Spark based on the 5 W's and H of the assignment
        • Ask yourself - is it thorough? Is it informative? Did it answer the questions? Is it visually pleasing? Was everything spelled correctly? Where their links? Videos?
        • Score it using our 1 - 5 scale - write in descriptive info about their site in regard to the above
      3. After viewing your classmates Sparks, you will then evaluate your own - answering the same questions and scoring it as well
      4. Turn you form back in to Rogan when you have completed thoroughly the handy-dandy scoresheet
